Search Engines: I Didn't Think I Was Lost?

Search engines all "look" at your website and try and determine what you're talking about, so that when someone searches for what your website talks about... you get found!

Some things to remember about search engines -

  • Search engines are reasonably dumb. If you have text on your website, they'll read it. If you have flash, graphics with words in them, or other non-text information, chances are they won't be seen by the search engines.
  • The more your website talks about your business and what you do, the more likely it will be found higher in the list of search results at your favorite search engine.
  • Try and think a little outside the box when you're creating your content for your website. Just because you call something a "gizmo", everyone else might call it a "widget". Make sure you use both terms on your website so no matter what someone searches for they'll find you.

There are loads of search engine optimization companies out there who claim they'll be able to get your web site up to the top of the list when searches are done - while not impossible, it's certainly tricky. Give it time and see how your web site does on its own before spending more money.
