April 18th 3W: Dal’s Women in Technology Society

For April’s Third Wednesday, Dalhousie University Women in Technology Society will be speaking about their organization and activities (more info to come).
The Women in Technology Society exists to support, promote, and celebrate female students pursuing or considering a degree within Dalhousie’s Technology related programs; to participate in existing programs such as open houses, CS Day, Supernova; and to introduce technology related programs to eligible females.

Slow down your browser by changing your nameservers!

A recent link I saw on Twitter pointed to an article on how to speed up your browser by changing your nameservers.

Unfortunately, while the change it suggests may make your browsing slightly faster, it will likely lead to an overall reduction in speed of your browsing experience.

Rather than click on the link, I decided to investigate a little further.

Backups: can you ever have enough?

Everyone needs backups of their important data.

Any good IT person knows that while copying data to an external hard disk is better than nothing, but leaving the drive on top of the PC it backed up doesn't really win you protection against theft, fire, etc.

For a very well written checklist of things to consider when designing and planning a backup system, check out The Tao of Backup. It's awesome - even if it is an advertisement for someone's product.

At both the 2011 and 2012 Atlantic Security Conference, I have volunteered to analyse WiFi traffic at the event and in 2012 I did a short presentation on my findings.
